After Gerda Wegener painted her husband Einar as a Lady in one of her popular paintings, he finds the passion to dress and act more feminine, naming himself Lili. With Gerda's support he attempts one of the first sex change surgeries, only to realize afterwards the huge impact this decision has on their marriage. When a childhood friend of Einar visits, a complex love triangle develops.
