This week we are showing you film gems from Japan in cooperation with the Japanese Cultural Institute (The Japan Foundation)
Double Feature! On this evening we will first show you the silent movie Jirokichi the Rat, and then the anime 5 Centimeters per Second. There will be a short break between the films.
In the classic "Jirokichi the Rat" (1931), it's about a master thief. He is wanted in Edo because he robs the villas of the rich. On the run, he falls in love with Osen, a girl who was sold to a brothel by her criminal brother Nikichi. When he wants to find Nikichi, he immediately falls in love with Okino, a poor girl who is also threatened by Nikichi.
In "5 Centimeters per Second", we follow Takai Tōno in three episodes, a young man who fell in love with Akari Shinohara in his childhood, but was separated from her due to various circumstances. The episodes tell of various phases in Takaki's life, in which he is confronted with his unrequited love for Akari, his loneliness, and his search for meaning.
